I began to question everything—not in a despairing way, but in the way a gardener might question what seeds to plant next. What would thrive in this season of my life? What fruits would feel most fulfilling to harvest?
It wasn’t that I didn’t know what I wanted to do. In fact, I knew all too well. The challenge wasn’t deciding what I wanted; it was that I wanted so many things. Everything, really. My spirit brimmed with desires, like a child at a grown-up’s party, peeking through the banister, desperate not to miss out on any of the fun.
But wanting everything has its price. I felt stretched, pulled, scattered—like confetti tossed into the wind. Each direction tugged at my heart with its worthiness, its promise of purpose.
And that’s when I realized something important: It’s not about choosing between all the things I want, but understanding the deeper, more personal forces that drive me. These forces—passion, purpose, vision, and mission—are what guide me, help me prioritize, and ultimately allow me to create a life that feels not just full, but aligned with my truest self.
I started by examining my passion, the things that light me up and give me energy. Then I explored my purpose, the enduring “why” that underpins all I do, the values and meaning that shape my choices. I reflected on my vision, the picture of the life I want to create, informed by my passions and purpose. And finally, I considered my mission, the actionable path that turns these dreams and values into reality.
Understanding these four elements has been transformational. It has allowed me to move from a state of overwhelm to a place of clarity and excitement. Now, I’m learning to honor each dimension in the small, everyday ways they weave into my life. I’ve found that when I live in harmony with passion, purpose, vision, and mission, I don’t feel scattered anymore. Instead, I feel connected to my deeper self, and everything I do—from raising chickens in my backyard to teaching others to find their own creativity—feels purposeful.
I’ve discovered that passion fuels my dreams, purpose gives them meaning, vision shows me where to go, and mission provides the path. Together, they guide me to live fully and authentically—not in a rush, but with intention.

The Intersection of Mission, Passion, and Vision: Cultivating an Exceptional Life
Where They Converge: Cultivating an Exceptional Life
Now, let’s take a closer look at how you can begin to uncover and align your own passions, purpose, vision, and mission. By understanding what truly drives you, you can start to create a life that feels both intentional and fulfilling. This isn’t just about setting goals—it’s about living in a way that resonates with who you are at your core. Together, we’ll explore how you can start this transformative process and bring clarity, alignment, and intention to your own journey.
Mission: Your Core Purpose
Your mission is the quiet whisper of your soul, the heartbeat that pulses beneath the surface of your daily actions. It is the essence of who you are and the reason you rise each morning. It is not a destination but a direction—your true north. Your mission does not come from without; it arises from deep within, guiding you toward a life of purpose and meaning. When you align with your mission, life becomes clearer, richer, and full of possibility.
Perhaps your mission is to offer kindness, to create, or to help others connect with their own hearts. Perhaps it is to transform the world in some way—through service, innovation, or simply by being present for others. Whatever it is, your mission is your soul’s calling.
On Life Purpose
Steve Pavliva, in his blog post on discovering one’s life purpose, wisely observed, “If you want to discover your true purpose in life, you must first empty your mind of all the false purposes you’ve been taught (including the idea that you may have no purpose at all).” When I think about it, many of my own past ambitions were false purposes—at least in the sense that they didn’t touch the deepest part of who I am. As fun as it might be to leave my mark as a judge on Iron Chef, I’d like to think my life holds a greater significance than that. I do know my life purpose: To help others navigate and overcome life’s stumbling blocks so they can increase their health, happiness, and joy. Yet, knowing my purpose doesn’t mean my other dreams don’t matter. For a time, I was tempted to strip my life of anything that didn’t directly align with this mission. But I’ve learned something essential: the things that light me up—the art, the writing, the travel, the creativity—fuel me. They fill my emotional and physical reservoirs, so I have more to give. We cannot pour from an empty cup. At one point in my entrepreneurial journey, I owned 50 domain names, each tied to a different passion or interest. It was exhilarating but unsustainable. Eventually, I condensed these fragments into a single space: Cultivate an Exceptional Life. This site became the canvas for my dreams—a place to share my love of food, travel, art, and photography (still a work in progress) and, most importantly, to inspire others with tools to overcome life’s challenges and avoid unnecessary stumbling blocks.
Having a Purpose in Life is Healthy
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us found ourselves asking the big questions. ALifeway Research survey, revealed that 57 percent of U.S. adults pondered, at least monthly, “How can I find more meaning and purpose in my life?” This was a noticeable rise from 51 percent in 2011. Interestingly, 21 percent of Americans now reflect on the meaning and purpose of life daily—a slight increase from 18 percent a decade earlier.
And yet, even as more people seek purpose, the same study uncovered a troubling reality: many feel there isn’t anything more to life than the grind of day-to-day living. Isn’t that heartbreaking? To move through life without the spark of meaning feels like living in black and white when the world is full of color.
The truth is, purpose isn’t just a luxury for the dreamers or idealists. Researchers have found that having a sense of purpose significantly correlates with longevity. Put simply: if you want to live longer, find something worth living for.
But it doesn’t stop there. A strong sense of purpose doesn’t just add years to your life; it adds life to your years. Studies show it has a profound impact on physical and mental health, enhancing well-being in ways we’re only beginning to understand.
Purpose fuels us, heals us, sustains us. It gives us resilience in times of challenge and joy in moments of triumph. It’s not about figuring out a grand, singular mission for your life, but rather discovering the threads of meaning woven through your everyday experiences—the people you love, the passions that light you up, the small acts of kindness that ripple outward.
So, as you navigate the twists and turns of life, keep asking those questions. Keep seeking meaning. Because in doing so, you’re not just enriching your own life; you’re creating a legacy that touches others in ways you may never fully see. And perhaps, that’s what purpose truly is—a gift that connects us to something bigger than ourselves.
“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.” – Buddha
Purpose and Psychological Well-Being
A strong sense of purpose in life is not only inspiring but also deeply beneficial to psychological well-being. The 2015 study by Krause and Hayward underscores this connection, demonstrating that individuals with a clear sense of purpose tend to enjoy higher emotional resilience, lower levels of depression, and greater overall psychological health.
Purpose acts as an emotional anchor, providing a sense of stability and direction even during challenging times. When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, having a purpose can serve as a guiding light, helping individuals navigate difficulties with clarity and resolve. This emotional resilience, in turn, fosters a greater capacity to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity.
The study also highlighted the protective effects of purpose against depression. By focusing on meaningful goals or contributing to something larger than oneself, individuals can redirect their energy away from negative thought patterns and build a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. This proactive approach to life encourages optimism and a forward-looking mindset, which are key components of psychological well-being.
Ultimately, cultivating a sense of purpose isn’t just about achieving goals—it’s about living a life filled with meaning and intention. Whether it’s through relationships, work, hobbies, or acts of service, finding and pursuing purpose can be transformative, enriching emotional health and enhancing the overall quality of life.
If you’re reflecting on your own life purpose, ask yourself:
- What stirs your heart? What is the legacy you hope to leave behind? In the stillness of your soul, what is it you yearn to give the world?
- What core desires connect all your dreams? How might you fulfill those deeper longings in new or unexpected ways?
- How can I honor my desires in ways that enrich my life and amplify what I’m called to do?
- How can my unique gifts best serve both me and my mission?
You don’t have to choose between living your purpose and honoring your passions. You can weave them together. When your pursuits align with your values, they bring meaning, not distraction. They reflect the essence of who you are and make life more vibrant. For me, my dreams are a window into my core values. They remind me of what matters most and what brings richness to my journey. They reveal my emotional needs and wants—my soul’s quiet whispers for fulfillment and joy. Living with purpose brings a deep sense of joy, but living in harmony with our values elevates our happiness factor. When we honor both, we cultivate a life that is as meaningful as it is joyous—a life worth savoring every step of the way
Passion: The Fuel for Your Dreams
Passion is what lights you up, what makes you feel fully alive. These are the things that energize you in the moment, that make time slip away and your heart race with excitement.
Passion is the spark that ignites the fire within you—the energy that draws you forward before logic has a chance to speak. It is often the first whisper of something more, a dream that lives at the edge of your consciousness, asking to be noticed. Where mission is grounded and steady, passion is fluid and dynamic. It can change and evolve as you grow, opening new doors and surprising you with new directions.
Passion shows up in the way your eyes light up when you talk about something you love. It’s the flow state where hours slip away unnoticed because you’re completely immersed in what you’re doing. It’s the restlessness that pushes you to try again, create again, explore again. Passion is energy in motion—joy, curiosity, and aliveness woven into action.
For some, passion emerges in the arts—writing, painting, dancing, or making music. For others, it lives in exploration and discovery: travel, cooking, learning languages, or studying the natural world. Passion may also be rooted in relationships—nurturing family, building community, mentoring others, or championing a cause. What matters is not where passion shows up, but that it awakens something inside you that says, this is what I was made to feel.
Passion, on its own, may not provide the long-term direction you need. A flame without a container burns out quickly. But passion fuels purpose and mission, ensuring that your path is not only meaningful but also alive with energy. Mission gives you roots, while passion gives you wings. Together, they create a life that is both grounded and expansive.
Examples from my life:
- Losing myself in painting for hours, experimenting with color and texture just for the joy of it.
- Writing short stories, journal entries, or essays, exploring ideas I’m curious about.
- Cooking new recipes or creating food experiences that delight the senses and spark connection with loved ones.
- Exploring new places on spontaneous adventures, even if it’s just a day trip.
- Teaching or mentoring, sharing skills and insights with others, and seeing the joy it brings them.
- What activities leave you feeling energized rather than drained?
- When do you lose track of time because you’re so engaged?
- What topics do you return to again and again in books, conversations, or daydreams?
- What makes your heart beat faster with excitement or anticipation?
- If you weren’t afraid of failing, what passion would you pursue wholeheartedly?
- How could you bring more of that passion into your everyday life?
Vision: The Plan for Possibility
When your mission and passion converge, your vision will begin to take shape. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to teach, and your mission is to empower others. Your vision might be to create a community of learners, to craft a course, or to write a book. Your vision is the practical path that allows you to bring your purpose and passions into tangible form.
- What would my life look like if you allowed my mission and passions to create the future I’ve always dreamed of?
- How can you begin to step into that vision today?
MY VISION
Some days, my heart longs for the art studio—a sanctuary where paint and possibility converge, letting me create to my soul’s content. On other days, I imagine splitting my time between crafting and teaching, sharing the joy of creativity with others and sparking inspiration in their lives.
Then there are the days when words call to me, urging me to write book after book—self-improvement guides, novels brimming with untold stories, or essays that bring clarity to life’s mysteries.
Some days, I feel pulled toward the deep, rewarding work of helping others—coaching, counseling, or connecting to make someone’s journey lighter and brighter. And there’s a thrill in the thought of speaking to groups, enriching lives with lessons learned and encouraging them to overcome their own stumbling blocks.
Other days, food adventures whispers in my ear. I dream of blogging about food, tasting my way through life’s flavors, and exploring new culinary experiences. I picture myself living boldly—perhaps as a vagabond, selling all my earthly possessions and traveling the world, immersing myself in the rich variety of cultures and cuisines. And maybe even judging culinary competitions on Iron Chef.
Still, part of me craves a New York City lifestyle, soaking up the electric buzz of the streets, the art, and the endless opportunities. And yet, on some days, all I want is to be the homeschooling mom who pours everything into helping her kids become the best versions of themselves.
Some days, the peaceful allure of country life calls to me. I picture myself purchasing a small farm, surrounded by acres of open land, where I can raise chickens and tend to a garden. There’s something so comforting about the thought of rocking gently on a porch at sunset, sipping lemonade and watching the world slow down around me. It’s a life of simplicity, rooted in nature’s rhythms, where each day brings its own quiet satisfaction—a place where I can feel grounded and at peace.
Some days, the call of adventure tugs at my soul, urging me to shed all my earthly possessions and embrace the life of a vagabond. I imagine selling everything, stepping into the unknown, and traveling the world with nothing but a backpack and a heart full of curiosity. The idea of exploring new places, meeting different people, and immersing myself in the rhythm of diverse cultures fills me with excitement. It’s a life of freedom, spontaneity, and discovery—where the journey itself becomes the destination.e, evaluating culinary masterpieces, excites me. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the stories, the creativity, and the artistry behind every dish. These are the moments that fuel my passion for food, connection, and discovery,
Some days, I simply crave stillness, a break from all the dreams and ambitions. I don’t want to chase any of those passions or goals; I just want to be. No painting, no teaching, no writing, no adventures—just a quiet pause. It’s as if the world has slowed, and all I need is to breathe, to rest in the present moment, and to reconnect with myself without any expectations or plans. It’s in these moments of doing nothing that I find space to renew and recalibrate, ready for the next pursuit when the time feels right.
And then there are days when none of these pursuits feel urgent, when just being present in the life I’ve built feels enough. Thankfully, most days, I’m still drawn to what I’m already doing—living a life that blends all these dreams in its own way.
And that’s the truth of it. We are not linear beings with tidy, predictable desires. We are vast, complex tapestries woven with many threads. Some sparkle with ambition, others glow softly with rest.
The secret, I think, is not choosing one purpose but embracing the ebb and flow of them all. To honor the shifting seasons of our souls, knowing that some dreams will rise to the forefront while others patiently wait their turn.
So, I carry these longings with me—not as a burden, but as a bouquet. I let them bloom when they’re ready, trusting that my life will unfold as beautifully as the garden I nurture within.
Here Are A Few of My Core Values and How They Tie Into My Life Purpose
CREATIVITY
“The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf
But here’s the thing: creativity doesn’t have to be about grand gestures or turning every talent into a career (though I reserve the right to do so someday!). It’s just as meaningful when expressed in small, intentional ways that enrich my life and those around me.
I can teach my daughters new art techniques—an act that fulfills so many parts of me: the mother who wants to give her children the best education, the artist who finds joy in creation, and the woman who delights in sharing beauty with the world.
I can blog about the meals I lovingly prepare for my family without needing it to lead to a seat at the Iron Chef judges’ table (though, let’s be honest, I’m never crossing Judge an Iron Chef Event off my bucket list). And maybe, just maybe, I can blog about food while enjoying an episode of Iron Chef.
I can share the healing power of art journaling, offering others a way to mend the wounds of their past and dream up a brighter future. Creativity, after all, is a balm for the heart and a spark for the soul.
And I can bring a little bit of country charm into my suburban life right now—by raising backyard chickens, tending to their needs, and finding joy in their feathered antics.
Creativity doesn’t demand an audience, accolades, or a professional platform. It simply asks to be expressed. It’s in the stories we tell, the meals we cook, the gardens we grow, and the love we give.
Creativity isn’t about the scale of what we do but the spirit with which we do it. It’s the joy we find in the process and the beauty we share along the way.
