I remember it well. Each day began with a silent negotiation as I lay in bed, summoning courage for the moment my feet would meet the floor. The pain was sharp, relentless, and contrary to the textbooks, it didn’t always ease as the hours passed. My doctor prescribed stretches, but they offered little solace. Foot massages, though slightly soothing in the moment, often left me wincing, and the reprieve was fleeting. Nothing seemed to prevent the pain from rearing its head again.
Then, as life often does, a moment of serendipity arrived. I was wandering through an outlet store when I spotted a pair of Croc lookalikes—a humble $10 find. I was reminded of an aunt who swore by her Crocs for the very same issue. Could these simple shoes offer the relief I so desperately needed? It seemed worth a try.
The moment I slipped them on, it was as if my feet breathed a deep, grateful sigh. I wore them the next day, and the day after that. To my amazement, the pain was gone. Not dulled, not diminished—gone. And it stayed gone, as long as I stuck to my newfound allies.
Of course, I’ve tested this discovery a few times—most memorably at Disney World. Thinking I’d do my feet a favor, I wore a pair of well-cushioned running shoes. By midday, tears rolled down my face with every step. That evening, I made a pilgrimage to a nearby Crocs store and bought not one, but three pairs. The rest of the trip passed blissfully pain-free.
Now,Crocs are my steadfast companions. They’re there in the everyday moments and even in the unintentional ones—like the time I realized, at my grandmother’s funeral no less, that I’d accidentally packed two left dress shoes. Without hesitation, I slipped on my trusty Crocs and carried on.
These days, if you see me on stage, chances are I’m wearing them. They may not be glamorous, but they are the reason I can walk, stand, and even dance without pain. And for that, I’m deeply grateful. So here’s to Crocs—and to finding unexpected solutions in the simplest of places.
