Earlier this month, just as the last light began to soften the edges of the day, I was drawn outside barefoot by the sight of red poppies blooming bright against the fading sky. Their delicate petals fluttered like quiet flames in the gentle evening breeze, and I felt the cool earth beneath my feet grounding me before the world fully slipped into night.

The chickens had been fed, their soft clucks lingering as they settled in for the evening. I then wandered to the back garden and paused by the rhubarb, now tall and gone to seed. I gently plucked the brittle pods, tucking them into my pocket. I’ll save them for spring planting—and to share, too, with someone who might need a quiet reminder that life continues, that renewal is always possible.

I wandered to the pea vines next, peeled open a few pods with dirt-smudged fingers, and ate the peas straight from their cradle. They were sweet and cool—a small, green offering from the earth.

Before heading in, I stopped to water the basil we planted just a few days ago. It’s still fragile, adjusting to its new surroundings. I poured the water slowly, watching it soak into the thirsty soil, imagining roots spreading quietly below the surface. It’s not flourishing yet, but it’s beginning. It’s doing the quiet work of becoming.

In that moment, surrounded by the familiar rhythm of tending and care, I felt something I hadn’t in a while: steadiness—not in my heart, which has been swirling with grief and anger over things I cannot fix—but in the act itself. In the soil, the water, the seeds tucked away for a gentler season. The garden held me when the world felt too sharp, too cruel.

It reminded me: It’s okay to say no.

Not out of fear or hardness, but out of deep reverence for your energy, your time, your life. When everything around you feels chaotic or heavy or unjust, saying no becomes a way to carve out sacred space for what is still good and growing within you.

Your energy is precious.

It’s the soil of your well-being, the heartbeat of your presence. It cannot be spent on everything and everyone. Not when you’re already carrying the weight of sorrow, or walking through complicated grief, or holding space for healing in the aftermath of harm.

It’s okay to say no, so you can cultivate what is yours to grow.

To cultivate is to choose—to tend with intention. And cultivating a meaningful life, one that feels rooted and real, requires choosing what truly belongs. It means making room for what nourishes your soul and letting go of what only drains or distracts.

You are not selfish for doing this. You are wise. You are listening to the quiet knowing inside you that says: This is the way forward.

You may disappoint people. You may feel discomfort. But like the basil adjusting to new soil, or the seeds held back for spring, not all growth is visible right away. Trust that something sacred is happening beneath the surface.

Each no, spoken with love, is a yes to something deeper. A yes to your peace. A yes to your truth. A yes to your purpose, slowly and steadily unfolding.

As the light faded and the night crept over the garden, I sat on the edge of the raised bed. My hands were still earthy, my heart still aching—but the ground beneath me was solid. And for that moment, that was enough.

And I thought of you.

I hope today, and in the days ahead, you give yourself permission to say no—not as a rejection, but as a redirection. Not just for peace, but for purpose. Not to escape, but to cultivate what still matters deeply, even in uncertain seasons.

With all my love and a handful of seeds,

~ Leisa
