I discovered Tiki Taco while on a recent vacation to Washington, D.C. It was conveniently close to our hotel, which made it an easy choice after a long day of exploring the US capital.
If you love tacos that are a little different from the usual, Tiki Taco in Dupont Circle is worth checking out. What makes it extra special is the story behind it. According to their website, the creator spent years living in Hawaii and traveling the islands. He found himself longing for the exquisite flavors of local cuisine and decided to recreate those flavors using the taco as the perfect vessel. That vision is clear in every bite.
I recently visited and tried their taco trio, and it was a fantastic way to sample some of their best offerings.
Out of the three, the coconut shrimp taco immediately became my favorite. Crispy, lightly sweet, and perfectly paired with fresh toppings and a hint of tropical sauce, it’s a taco that truly stands out. While my all-time favorite El Pastor taco was from a spot in Seattle, this coconut shrimp taco easily rivals anything I’ve had elsewhere—it’s that memorable.
The tofu taco was a revelation. I had never tried a tofu taco before, and I can’t imagine any other tofu taco coming close. Crispy, perfectly seasoned, and full of texture, it completely changed my idea of what a vegetarian taco could be. I had always thought of tofu as bland and textureless, but after this, I ended up ordering another tofu dish at a different restaurant later in the week—and it was also very good.
The Kailua Pork taco rounded out my trio. Tender, savory pulled pork with Hawaiian-style seasonings and toppings provided a rich, satisfying contrast to the lighter and sweeter coconut shrimp taco. It was a perfect balance and a reminder of the tropical inspiration behind the menu.
Bringing Hawaii to Dupont Circle
Tiki Taco goes beyond just tacos. The menu reflects the creator’s love of island flavors and local foods, offering seasonal specials that highlight fresh, tropical ingredients. From tacos and poke bowls to tiki wings, the goal is to let customers enjoy a little taste of Hawaii right in D.C. And if the spice gets to you—or you just want a refreshing treat—Hawaiian shaved ice is the perfect way to cool off.
