There are days when it feels as though kindness has gone into hiding. Perhaps you’ve felt it too—that quiet ache when you read the headlines, scroll through social media, or overhear strangers snapping at each other in line. It’s a sorrow that settles in the soul, whispering, We were meant for more than this.
And we were.
But in the din of division, it becomes all too easy to forget. Not just forget the gentle truths of our own hearts, but to forget one another. To stop seeing one another—not as names, faces, stories—but as human. And when that sacred sight is lost, the consequences echo far beyond our own small circle.
But before we can ask how to remember again, we must first ask: who gains from our forgetfulness?
A World That Profits from Our Amnesia
It may be a difficult truth to sit with, but some do benefit when we grow numb to one another’s humanity.
There are those who rise to power not by building bridges, but by erecting walls. When we stop seeing each other as kindred spirits, they offer us enemies instead—people to blame, to fear, to shun. And in that fear, they gain followers, votes, and obedience. Their power depends on our division.
There are media outlets that feed us stories not to nourish, but to inflame. They know that outrage makes us click, and that complexity and compassion rarely sell. Nuance, after all, doesn’t fit neatly into a headline.
There are algorithms that don’t love us. They don’t even know us. They simply measure what we’ll stay glued to—and it’s often the drama, the judgment, the polarization. And while they profit from our scrolling, we quietly starve for real connection.
Even in the hum of daily life, there are economic systems that rely on us not knowing too much.
- Not knowing who picked our strawberries or stitched our T-shirts.
- Not seeing the mother working three jobs.
- Missing the quiet fatigue in the footsteps of the one who sweeps the halls..
Perhaps, if we saw them fully—as souls with dreams and dignity—we might demand a different world. And that would cost someone, somewhere, their comfort.
The Soul’s Deepest Loss
But while systems may gain, we lose something irreplaceable.
We lose community, trust, and belonging. We lose the simple grace of looking into another’s eyes and recognizing ourselves. We lose the capacity to heal the world, because healing begins only when we see the wound—and the one who bears it.
When we stop seeing each other as human, we begin to forget our own humanity. We harden ourselves against tenderness, because we think it makes us weak. But let me remind you, dear heart: tenderness is not weakness. It’s strength braided with wisdom.
The Holy Work of Remembering
So what can we do in a world that’s forgotten how to see?
We begin the way all sacred journeys begin: slowly, and with reverence.
We pause. We breathe. We listen.
We ask ourselves: What if every soul I meet today is carrying something I cannot see? What if beneath every harsh word is a story I don’t know? What if being right isn’t as important as being kind?
And then we live the answer.
We smile at the cashier. We hold the door open. We resist the urge to shout online, and instead ask a question. We remember birthdays. We pray for strangers. We choose compassion, again and again—even when the world says it’s naïve.
This is not passive work. It is the bravest kind. Because in a world that profits from our forgetting, choosing to see each other as human again is an act of holy rebellion.
A Prayer to End Your Day
As evening wraps around you and a soft light glows nearby, may a quiet blessing rise within you:
“Let me remember today who I really am. Let me remember who others truly are. Let me choose love over fear. Let me begin again tomorrow, with open eyes and a tender heart.”
Because when we remember each other’s humanity, something beautiful begins to shift.
Not just out there, in the noisy world.
But within.
And that—sweet soul—is where every miracle begins.
