The power of words is something we must never underestimate, especially when dealing with chronic illness, mental health issues, or post-traumatic stress disorder. They have the profound ability to shift our perspective, reshape our understanding of life, our illness, and even our future. Some words hold a weight far greater than others, simply by their very nature.
Words like:
“I am proud of you.”
“You are brilliant.”
“I appreciate you.”
“We care.”
These words build us up, fortify our spirit. And then there are the words that threaten to tear us down:
“I hate you.”
“You’re stupid.”
“I’m not good enough.”
And then there are those words that once carried little weight—those phrases that once merely passed through the air without touching the soul. But life, with all its trials and tribulations, has a way of transforming words, turning them into emotional markers. Words like:
- Cancer.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Car accident.
- Rape.
- Concussion.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Feeding tube.
- Surgery.
- Lyme disease.
- Autoimmune disease.
- Traumatic brain injury.
- Hashimoto’s.
- Blood sugar.
- Disability.
- Kidney disease.
There was a time when these words were mere labels, unfamiliar strangers that held no real connection to me. But now? Now, each one holds a unique, emotional charge, tied directly to my experience. Their power has shifted, imbued with meaning I never asked for, but which life has so generously offered. These words are no longer neutral. They have become part of my story.
The Feelings We Attach to Words Determine How Much Power They Have
![Nothing determines how one feels about their life experience as much as the personal meaning we attach words and the power we give them. The feelings we attach to words determine exactly how much power they have over us. Nothing shapes how we feel about our life experiences more than the personal meaning we attach to words and the power we give them. We have the ability to decide whether a word will serve as a source of strength or as an obstacle in our path. By choosing words that affirm our resilience, we can reframe the challenges of chronic illness and transform them into opportunities for growth.
I can choose whether these words have power over me, whether they define my story. I am the author of my narrative. And I have the right to choose the kind of power they wield.

I choose…
Opportunity, not a battle
I choose to see this not as a battle to fight, but as an opportunity to embrace. To call it a “battle” feels exhausting, a never-ending fight. Instead, I choose to see this moment as a chance—an opportunity to inspire, to learn, to grow, to connect on a deeper level. I see opportunity, and that makes the journey feel exciting, rather than defeating.

I choose…
Victor, not victim.
I do not label myself as a victim, for doing so would taint my perception of these experiences. I refuse to view these challenges through the lens of victimhood. Instead, I choose to see them as opportunities—opportunities to grow, to learn, to appreciate, to make an impact, to connect, to simplify. In this moment, I choose to be the victor of my story, rather than a casualty of my circumstances.
![I choose resilience, not breakable.-min](https://cultivateanexceptionallife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/I-choose-resilience-not-breakable.-min.jpg)
I choose..
Resilient, not breakable.
Yes, the weight is heavy. Yes, the burden sometimes seems unbearable. But I do not choose to see it as something that can break me. I choose to believe in my resilience, in the ability to bounce back, to recover quickly from difficult circumstances. I choose to trust in my strength, in my family’s strength, to endure and emerge even stronger, even when life stretches us beyond what we ever thought possible.
![I choose supported. Not unsupported.-min](https://cultivateanexceptionallife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/I-choose-supported.-Not-unsupported.-min.jpg)
I choose…
Supported, not unsupported.
I choose to reach out, to call upon the strength and support of others, rather than suffer alone. I choose to take the necessary actions to invite help into my life. I no longer believe that I must do everything on my own, that silence equals strength. I have learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but an act of power. To ask is to take control, to reclaim my strength, and to open myself to the support that I deserve.
And so, I choose. Every day, I choose. I choose the power of words to shape my experience, to light my path, and to build the life I wish to live, no matter the circumstances.

The Healing Potential of Language
The words we use shape not only how we see ourselves but also how we interact with the world. By consciously choosing language that is empowering and affirming, we can change the narrative around chronic illness. Instead of focusing on limitations, we focus on possibilities. Instead of dwelling on what we can’t do, we celebrate what we can do, no matter how small.
Language is a tool for healing—one that can help us reclaim our sense of self, redefine our journey, and cultivate resilience in the face of chronic illness. By choosing words that heal, we take control of our story and begin to write a new chapter—one where we are empowered, capable, and strong.
Practical Steps for Reframing Your Language
Practice Affirmations:
Write down five positive affirmations each morning. Focus on words that inspire hope, strength, and resilience.
Example: “I am in control of my healing.” “I am capable of facing challenges with grace.”
Monitor Your Self-Talk:
Pay attention to the words you use when talking about your illness. Replace negative terms with more empowering alternatives.
Instead of “I’m always sick,” try “I am managing my health as best as I can.”
Create a Healing Vocabulary
Make a list of words that resonate with you and make you feel strong and hopeful. Refer to this list when you need a reminder of your own power.
Examples: Resilient, empowered, adaptable, peaceful, courageous, healing.
Reframe Conversations with Others
When talking about your chronic illness with loved ones, aim to use language that emphasizes collaboration, support, and hope. This helps both you and your support system stay focused on solutions and growth.
Surround Yourself with Empowering Language
Read books, watch videos, or listen to podcasts that use positive, empowering language. The more we hear uplifting words, the more naturally we begin to adopt them ourselves.
REMEMBER…
The language we use has immense power to shape our lives and our experiences. When living with chronic illness, the words we choose can either hold us back or help us move forward. By consciously choosing empowering, positive language, we have the ability to reframe our journey, cultivate resilience, and reclaim our sense of agency. The power of words truly can heal—if we choose them wisely.
Our word choice shapes our reality. The labels we attach to our life experiences, shape our reality.
- What labels are you attaching to your life experiences?
